Bryce Canyon

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

The end of another month and we spent it driving to and in Bryce Canyon.  This National Park is like no other in the world.  Full of all sorts of various stone formations and Hoodoos.  The hills are all multiple colors due to the layers of sedimentation from millions of years of erosion.  We were surprised to see so much snow, especially in the higher elevations.  We were as high as 8810 feet.  We had climbed from our campground steady up hill for about 20 miles or more.  Very interesting as there are small farms scattered along the countryside.  Bryce Canyon is also desert but with all the snow there is a lot of snow melt runoff in the spring and the summer brings many fierce thunderstorms.  We saw evidence of lighting strikes that started small forest fires.  On the way to the Canyon we saw antelope and one lone wild turkey crossing the road.  In the park we saw prairie dogs in the field just beginning to come out of hibernation.  One of the most interesting things to do when we first get to the parks is to take in the short movie on the parks to get a quick overview and the reason behind the geology that produced the strange landscapes.

We drove east out of the park to look for a place for lunch as everything in the park and the close area are closed, not quite tourist season yet.  We both think that there are still a lot of people in the park for it not to be season yet.  A number of tour buses with foreign tourists.
